What a Stale Facebook Page Really Costs a Local Business

Ask a local business owner what their Facebook page is worth and most will say “not much.” Then watch what a customer actually does before calling someone new.

They search. They find two or three businesses. They tap the Facebook page. And they make a judgment in about four seconds based on one thing: when did these people last post?

A quiet feed reads as “out of business”

It’s an unfair signal, but it’s a consistent one. A page whose last post is eight months old suggests the business slowed down, changed hands, or closed. There’s no way for a stranger to tell the difference between “busy and not posting” and “gone.”

The competitor who posted a job photo on Tuesday looks alive. Alive gets the call.

It also costs you with Google

Active, consistent profiles feed the same signals that help you show up in local results — reviews arriving, posts going out, the business name and address repeating consistently across the web. Google Business Profile posts in particular are dramatically underused by local businesses, and they’re free.

The real problem isn’t laziness

Every owner I talk to already knows they should post. The gap is that posting well requires deciding what to say, writing it, finding an image, and doing it again in three days — forever. That’s a job, not a task. So it gets skipped in the exact months when work is busy, which are the months you’re building material worth posting about.

What a working rhythm looks like

  • Proof, not promotion. Finished work, before-and-afters, a problem you diagnosed. People trust evidence far more than adjectives.
  • Answers to real questions. Whatever customers ask you on the phone every week is content. Say it once publicly instead of a hundred times privately.
  • A predictable cadence. Two or three times a week beats twelve posts in one afternoon and then silence.
  • Tie it back to the site. Social builds familiarity; the website converts it. They need to be running from the same plan.

The honest math

If you get one extra job a month because a customer saw an active page instead of a dead one, most local businesses have already covered the cost of doing this properly. That’s the whole argument. It doesn’t require believing anything mystical about marketing — only that people judge businesses by whether they look like they’re still working.
