Why Google Ignores Your Business Website (And What Actually Fixes It)

Most local business owners I meet have a website that was built once, launched, and never touched again. It looks fine. It has the phone number. And it brings in almost nothing.

That’s not bad luck. It’s how Google works.

Google measures whether you’re still alive

Search engines are trying to answer one question: if I send someone to this business, will they have a good experience? A site that hasn’t published anything in three years is a weak signal. A site that publishes useful, specific pages about the work it actually does — every week — is a strong one.

It isn’t about writing more words. It’s about routine. Fresh, relevant, consistent. Google rewards that pattern, and so do the AI assistants people increasingly ask for recommendations.

The three things that make a site invisible

  1. No service pages. One page listing eight services isn’t going to rank for any of them. Each service you sell — and each town you serve — deserves its own page written for someone searching that exact thing.
  2. No publishing rhythm. A blog with two posts from 2022 is worse than no blog. It tells a visitor the business may not be operating.
  3. Dead social feeds. Your Facebook page is often the first thing a customer checks. If the last post is from last spring, they assume you’re closed and they call the next name on the list.

Why owners don’t fix it

Not because they don’t understand it. Because the day is full. You’re on a job at 7am, quoting at 5pm, and invoicing at 9pm. Writing a 900-word article about seasonal maintenance is never going to win that fight, and it shouldn’t have to.

That’s the whole reason content marketing has stayed a big-company advantage. It’s not that the strategy is complicated — it’s that it requires someone to show up and publish, week after week, forever.

What actually fixes it

Systems, not willpower. The businesses that win locally have something — a person, an agency, a process — that guarantees content ships whether or not anyone felt like writing that week.

The mechanics are unglamorous: know which searches your customers actually type, publish a page for each one, keep the site technically healthy and fast, and keep the social feeds moving so the people who find you see a business that’s clearly running.

Do that for six months and the compounding is obvious. Do it for zero months and no amount of website redesign will save you.

If you’re not sure where your site stands, that’s worth measuring before you spend a dollar on anything else.
